Thousands of Filipino Muslims gathered on Wednesday, May 27, to celebrate Eid’l Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, at major mosques in Manila and Taguig City.
In Quiapo, Manila, Muslim devotees flocked to the Golden Mosque as early as before sunrise to take part in congregational prayers marking one of Islam’s holiest celebrations, according to Tina Nolasco’s report during Dos Por Dos.
The mosque, which can accommodate around 3,000 people, overflowed with worshippers, with crowds extending along Globo de Oro Street.
Eid’l Adha commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah. The feast is considered a sacred occasion among Muslims, symbolizing sacrifice, unity, generosity, and love.
Following the prayers, Muslim families prepared for the traditional slaughter of goats and cattle, which are shared among relatives, neighbors, and those in need as part of the celebration. Two goats were among the animals prepared for sacrifice in remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion and faith.
Meanwhile, in Taguig City, as reported by RH Jecelle Ricafort, an estimated 10,000 Muslims gathered early at the Blue Mosque in Barangay Maharlika for the observance of Eid’l Adha.
By 4 a.m., the mosque and nearby areas along Mindanao Avenue were already filled with worshippers participating in prayers and religious activities.
The celebration also included the slaughter of halal animals and the distribution of food to residents, including non-Muslims, as part of the charitable efforts associated with the feast.
According to the Taguig City Police Station, the celebration remained generally peaceful, with no untoward incidents recorded during the observance.
Meanwhile, the Manila Police District (MPD) said the moon sighting activity for Eid’l Adha held at Rizal Park was “generally peaceful.”
