Filipino families are being encouraged to spend time together over a shared meal today, September 28, as the country observes “Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga” Day, held every fourth Monday of September as part of the annual National Family Week.
The observance aims to highlight the importance of family meals in strengthening family ties, communication and unity.
Under Proclamation No. 326, signed in 2012, the fourth Monday of September every year was declared “Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga” Day. The proclamation recognizes the Filipino tradition of gathering for a common family meal as an expression of unity and thanksgiving.
The proclamation also notes that sharing meals gives parents an opportunity to remain connected with their children and understand the challenges they face. It calls on government agencies, local government units and other institutions to support activities promoting the observance.
This year's celebration is part of the 34th National Family Week, which runs during the last week of September.
Meanwhile, government offices under the Executive Branch are observing shortened working hours today, with work suspended starting 1 p.m., to give government employees and their families an opportunity to participate in National Family Week activities. Agencies providing basic and health services, disaster and calamity response, and other vital services are required to continue operations.
Malacañang has also encouraged other branches of government, independent commissions and bodies, as well as the private sector, to support the observance and provide families with an opportunity to celebrate together.
Families are encouraged to use the occasion to set aside time for a shared meal, reconnect with one another and strengthen family relationships.
