A Filipino climber died while preparing for the summit push at Mount Everest on Wednesday evening.
According to the report by The Himalayan Times, Earth’s highest mountain recorded its first death of the 2025 climbing season. Based on its report, the Snowy Horizon Treks Managing Director, Bodhraj Bhandari, stated that the Filipino climber, Philipp Santiago II, passed away at Camp IV while preparing for the summit push the night before.
Camp IV on Mount Everest is often referred to as the “death zone,” due to its extremely high altitude. In the said location, air pressure and oxygen levels are extremely low, that it is difficult to sustain human life for an extended period.
It is also the final camp before the summit push.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, journalist Emil Sumangil shared that his cousin, Santiago, is expected to reach the Mount Everest summit on Thursday, May 15.
“Sa kaluoban ng Mahal na Diyos Ama, maging matagumpay at ligtas ang lahat. Humihingi po kami ng panalangin mula sa inyo,” he captioned his post.
However, come Thursday afternoon, Sumangil confirmed the passing of his cousin.
“We also continue to pray for the safety and well-being of Karl Miguel Santiago during this difficult time,” he captioned his post.
“The family respectfully requests privacy as we grieve and process these events. Your understanding, support, and prayers are deeply appreciated. Maraming Salamat po,” he added.
Santiago was part of the Mountaineering Association of Krishnanagar - Snowy Everest Expedition 2025. According to the report, efforts are now underway to bring his body to the base camp.
They have yet to identify the cause of Santiago’s death.
