A Filipina domestic worker has been hailed as a hero after risking her life to save a three-month-old baby from a deadly fire in Tai Po, Hong Kong.
Rhodora Alcaraz chose to remain inside the burning apartment, holding the infant tightly and using her own body to shield the child from flames and thick smoke, rather than fleeing to safety. Her courageous act ultimately saved the baby’s life.
Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Administrator PY Caunan, together with Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Cacdac, visited Alcaraz personally. They were joined by representatives from the Philippine Consulate General and the Hong Kong Labour and Welfare Bureau.
During the visit, officials assured Alcaraz of the government’s full support and care, promising assistance for her and her child in the Philippines. Part of this support includes helping her sibling continue their college education.
Alcaraz is currently receiving ongoing medical treatment, and authorities report that her condition is gradually improving.
Officials called on the public to keep Alcaraz in their thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.
According to Reuters, the death toll from Hong Kong’s deadliest fire in decades reached 159 on Wednesday, December 3. Earlier, the Hong Kong government announced that it would provide compensation to the families of domestic workers affected by the incident.
