Two of the three family members riding a motorcycle were killed after a dump truck loaded with sand overturned and crushed them along Luzon Avenue in Barangay Culiat, Quezon City, early Tuesday morning, the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) confirmed.
The fatalities were identified as a 42-year-old motorcycle rider and his 11-month-old child, while the child’s mother was injured, according to a DZRH's report by RH Val Gonzales.
The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said the father was declared dead at 2:23 a.m., while his infant child died at 4:55 a.m.
Meanwhile, the 31-year-old live-in partner of the rider, who is also the child’s mother, sustained injuries and fractures to her foot. She is currently receiving treatment at East Avenue Medical Center.
The accident occurred near the intersection of Luzon Avenue and Congressional Avenue shortly after midnight.
Initial police investigation showed that the dump truck was allegedly traveling at high speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle.
The driver told authorities that the truck’s brakes failed, causing it to hit the center island and overturn, crushing the victims.
The 40-year-old truck driver is now under the custody of the QCPD Traffic Enforcement Unit’s Traffic Sector 6.
Police are preparing the appropriate charges against the driver.
When asked by DZRH News for comment, the suspect declined to issue a statement regarding the incident.
