Fashion designer Michael Ellis Co publicly addressed allegations against his father, Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co, who is facing corruption accusations linked to flood control projects.
Michael Co posted a lengthy statement on Instagram on Wednesday, sharing his perspective on his family, career, and his fashion brand, .ARCHIVES.
In his post, Michael Co emphasized that .ARCHIVES is a collaborative effort involving 15 tailors, 10 staff members, and three designers. He said the brand focuses on supporting local designers, paying fair rates, and creating opportunities for Filipino creatives.
“.ARCHIVES was never just about me. It's a team of 15 tailors, 10 staff members, and 3 designers. My shared mission with my team goes beyond making clothes; it's to uplift artists, support our tailors, and work with integrity,” Co said in his online statement.
He noted that the company has shifted from large fashion shows to smaller events and community-based projects in recent years due to financial constraints.
Michael Co also described his personal efforts to give back to the creative community, including providing equipment and support to local designers and artists.
He stressed that he does not condone corruption or misuse of public funds and emphasized his commitment to ethical practices within his brand.
“I do not stand for corruption, I do not stand for taking advantage of taxpayers' money. I stand for opening doors so other less fortunate, talented, gifted Filipino designers and creatives can walk through it. I have not strayed away from this mission. I'm here to address the situation,” the fashion designer stated.
Regarding his father, Michael Co wrote that he urges Zaldy Co to face accountability and address the allegations publicly. He stated that anyone proven guilty should face the proper consequences and expressed support for anti-corruption efforts by the public.
“I urge him to appear before the people and be accountable once and for all. I am not just speaking out against a politician; I am speaking out against my father.”
Michael Co also addressed online discourse surrounding the issue, calling for the protection of his brand’s staff and collaborators, who he said are not involved in the allegations.
He concluded by reaffirming .ARCHIVES’ mission to support Filipino artistry and creative professionals.
