The absence of former Department of Education (DepEd) Special Disbursing Officer Edward Fajarda from the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte will only slightly delay the proceedings, defense counsel Atty. Michael Poa said.

Fajarda was unable to attend the trial after reportedly suffering a stroke.

Asked whether Fajarda's absence would benefit the defense or affect the prosecution, Poa said he was not aware of the full details of Fajarda's condition but had learned about his hospitalization last week.

“I think magtetestify din naman sa September 7 yung reserved na date. Lalabas din naman yan,” Poa said.

Poa said he had considered visiting Fajarda in the hospital but decided against it because Fajarda is under subpoena.

“I really wish him well. I hope he’s okay,” Poa said, adding that he had instead asked common friends and former colleagues about Fajarda’s condition.

Poa said Fajarda is still expected to testify on Sept. 7, which remains his reserved hearing date.

“Maybe the effect is medyo na-delay lang ng konti,” Poa said.

Fajarda's testimony is expected to form part of the prosecution's presentation in the impeachment case against Duterte.
