Former senator Francis Tolentino has been appointed acting secretary of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Malacañang announced Monday, following the resignation of Bienvenido Laguesma due to health concerns.
Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed confidence in Tolentino’s ability to lead the agency, citing his experience in government service.
“Tiwala si Pangulong Marcos Jr. na mapamumunuan ni incoming Acting Secretary Tolentino ang DOLE dahil sa kanyang kakayahan at malawak na karanasan sa paghawak ng mahahalagang tungkulin sa pamahalaan, local o national,” Castro said during a press briefing.
Tolentino’s appointment comes as Laguesma formally announced he is stepping down from his post to focus on his health, ending a tenure marked by decades of public service.
In a statement, Laguesma said his decision was necessary to allow the department to continue focusing on its mandate, including promoting employment opportunities, protecting workers’ rights, and maintaining industrial peace.
“For almost three decades serving in various capacities, public service has not only been my profession — it has been my life’s calling,” Laguesma said. “Every decision I have made… has been anchored in my deep love for our country and my unwavering belief in the Filipino people.”
He also expressed gratitude to Marcos for the trust and confidence given to him, as well as to his colleagues in the Cabinet and DOLE personnel.
Laguesma said he hopes his legacy in the department would be one of integrity, compassion, and genuine service to Filipino workers.
The Palace did not immediately provide details on how long Tolentino will serve in an acting capacity, but said a transition process is underway to ensure continuity in the department’s programs and services.
