Former Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice Amparo Cabotaje-Tang took the witness stand on Monday as the prosecution’s first witness for Article II of Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial, which focuses on alleged unexplained wealth.
Tang took her oath before the Senate impeachment court and is expected to discuss public accountability and how unexplained or improperly accumulated wealth is assessed among public officials.
Among the issues she may address are when an official’s wealth becomes questionable, whether assets not registered under an official’s name may still be considered, the accountability standards for the President and Vice President, and whether top government officials may engage in businesses with transactions involving the government.
She may also explain the role of the Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) in determining a public official’s financial status.
The prosecution presented Tang as its expert witness at the start of the proceedings on Article II, which also covers alleged false SALNs and continued business interests.
