President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is considering former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief General Nicolas Torre III for another position in government, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla said.
“The President is considering him [Gen. Torre] for another post in government. We will know soon if Gen. Torre will accept,” DILG Sec. Remulla said in a press briefing in Camp Crame on Tuesday.
Torre was relieved from his post as PNP chief earlier in the day through a memorandum signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin.
According to Remulla, Torre's removal was a matter of reinforcing institutional integrity rather than a result of wrongdoing.
“We are a country of laws and not of men, that the institutions must be larger than the people who run it. In this case the president saw it necessary that the institution of the PNP and the NAPOLCOM (National Police Commission) be upheld as according to the spirit of the law as it was created,” DILG Sec. Remula explained at the press conference.
Meanwhile, Police General Jose Melencio Corpuz Nartatez Jr. formally assumed office as officer-in-charge (OIC) of the Philippine National Police on the same day, replacing Gen. Torre.
The Palace has yet to issue a formal statement regarding Torre’s possible new assignment or the circumstances surrounding his departure from the police force.
Torre, who assumed office as PNP chief on June 2, 2025, served less than three months before his replacement.
Remulla did not provide further details on the position being considered for Torre or the timeline for any announcement.
