A former Land Bank of the Philippines branch manager took the stand Wednesday as the prosecution’s second witness in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, detailing the encashment of multimillion-peso checks linked to Department of Education (DepEd) funds.

Nenita Camposano, former branch manager of LandBank’s DepEd branch, testified during the 10th day of trial proceedings focused on Article 1, which alleges misuse of confidential funds.

Prosecutor Rep. Joel Chua presented Camposano to establish that the LandBank-DepEd branch processed the encashment of three checks worth P37.5 million each, all drawn against a DepEd account.

The checks, dated Feb. 20, 2023, April 19, 2023, and July 11, 2023, were issued in the name of Edward D. Fajarda, identified as a special disbursing officer of the Department of Education.

The prosecution said the witness is expected to establish that, as department manager at the time, she personally witnessed and supervised the encashment of the checks and the release of the funds to Fajarda.

The defense, for its part, stipulated the authenticity of the checks, including the signatures appearing on them, their issuance by the Bureau of the Treasury, and Camposano’s identity and competence to identify the documents presented.

The proceedings form part of the prosecution’s effort to substantiate allegations that confidential funds under Duterte’s office were improperly disbursed.
