Senate leadership is hoping that former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Manuel Bonoan will attend the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing scheduled this Monday afternoon.
This comes after reports confirmed his return to the Philippines following a several-month stay in the United States.
Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III said Bonoan is among 12 individuals who have been subpoenaed by the Senate in connection with the ongoing investigation into the flood control scandal.
Those who fail to attend today’s hearing face being cited for contempt and potentially having a warrant of arrest issued against them.
Last week, Senate President Pro Tempore and Blue Ribbon Committee Chair, Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, revealed that Bonoan had submitted incorrect grid coordinates for certain flood control projects in Malacañang last year, allegedly to mislead investigators and cast doubt on the reports submitted to the President.
Aside from Bonoan, the hearing will also feature Batangas 1st District Representative Leandro Leviste, who will discuss the so-called Cabral files. Meanwhile, the “BGC Boys” – Henry Alcantara, Brice Hernandez, and JP Mendoza – are expected to be confronted over previous testimonies that reportedly contradicted earlier statements made to the Senate committee.
According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), Alcantara has already entered the Witness Protection Program and previously returned a significant amount of money and vehicles, along with Hernandez, which were allegedly linked to kickbacks in flood control projects.
The Senate Blue Ribbon Committee is set to resume hearings on the flood control scam at 1:00 p.m. today.
