A former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) official returned ₱40 million in restitution to the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Tuesday, December 16.

The money, former DPWH-NCR Regional Director Engr. Gerald Opulencia gave back was from kickbacks he received in the anomalous flood control projects, reported RH 29 Boy Gonzales.

According to DOJ Acting Secretary Fredderick Vida, this is just part of the ₱150 million Opulencia intends to return.

Opulencia has been admitted under the DOJ’s Witness Protection Program (WPP). He currently faces a case in connection with anomalous flood control projects in Bulacan.

The ₱40 million will be brought to the National Treasury.
