House prosecutor Rep. Joel Chua said the prosecution’s evidence will strongly counter misinformation amid the expected surge of fake news that could divert public attention from the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Speaking during the Saturday News Forum, Chua said misinformation could be used to divert public attention from the impeachment proceedings and weaken public support for the case.

“Hindi maaalis na maglalabasan ang maraming fake news,” Chua said during the press briefing.

“Naniniwala kami na sinisimulan itong impeachment, mas umiigting itong trial sa impeachment ms umiigting din ang mga paninira, mga fake news para ma-divert ang atensyon ng ating mga kababayan dito sa impeachment ng sa gayon hindi makakuha ng matinding suporta sa ating mamamayan,” he said.

“Wala pong pinakamatinding panabla sa fake news kundi po ang ebidensya na ilalatag po namin,” Chua said when asked what the prosecution plans to do to counter the expected spread of misinformation.

Despite the expected misinformation, the prosecution panel remains focused on presenting its case before the Senate, Chua added.

He said the prosecution is confident that the evidence it will present will effectively counter any fake news surrounding the impeachment complaint.

“Kami po sa panig ng prosecution ay nakafocus lamang po kami sa aming gawain sa aming trabaho at ang focus lamang namin ay mailatag ng maayos ang ebidensya sa ating mga kababayan. At makita ng ating mga kababayan kung totoo ba o hindi itong mga paratang sa ating Bise Presidente,” Chua said.

The impeachment trial against Duterte is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 6, before the Senate sitting as an impeachment court.
