Presiding Officer Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero cracked a joke during the 10th day of Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial after both the prosecution and defense declined to identify their respective witnesses who could discuss the handling of confidential funds.

The remark came after Senator-Judge Panfilo “Ping” Lacson raised concerns over the absence of a “competent witness,” such as a retired intelligence officer, who could explain the procedures and operations involving confidential funds.

Escudero responded with a light remark after the two panels maintained their decision to keep their witnesses undisclosed.

“Confidential pa raw po,” Escudero said.

House Prosecutor Rep. Joel Chua said the prosecution has a witness prepared but will present the individual only when they deem it necessary.

“Your Honor, may ipe-present po kami pero kung makikita po ninyo sa aming pre-trial brief, mayroon po roong reservation,” Chua said.

Defense spokesperson Atty. Michael Poa also confirmed that the defense has the same reservation regarding their witness.

“Mayroon pa rin po kaming reservation so we will present when we feel necessary,” Poa said.

The exchange occurred as the Senate impeachment court continued discussions on Article I of the complaint, which involves allegations surrounding the alleged misuse of confidential funds allocated to the Office of the Vice President (OVP) and the Department of Education (DepEd).
