The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Tuesday expressed support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s call to remove system loss charges from consumers’ electricity bills, saying the move could help ease the burden of rising power costs on Filipino households and businesses.

During the President's fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, July 27, at the Batasang Pambansa Complex, Marcos urged Congress to support the removal of the system loss charge from electricity bills, citing the need to reduce the financial burden on Filipino consumers.

The ERC said it is ready to work with the government in pursuing reforms that would prioritize consumer welfare while ensuring that the country’s electricity supply remains reliable and sustainable.

“The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) welcomes the President's call and affirms its support for policy reforms that place the welfare of electricity consumers at the forefront,” the agency said in a statement.

The ERC emphasized the importance of implementing measures that would reduce unnecessary costs while maintaining the viability of distribution utilities and promoting a more efficient, affordable, and reliable power sector.

“The Commission likewise recognizes the importance of pursuing measures that help reduce unnecessary costs while ensuring the viability of all distribution utilities and promoting a more efficient, affordable, and reliable power sector,” the ERC added.

As the country’s independent electric power industry regulator, the ERC said it will coordinate with Congress, the Department of Energy (DOE), industry stakeholders, and other government agencies to develop the necessary legal and regulatory measures for the proposed reform.

The commission also reiterated its commitment to protecting consumers through transparent, fair, and accountable regulation while supporting initiatives aimed at lowering electricity rates without compromising the quality and reliability of power services nationwide.
