An elf truck fell into the sea at the Port of Masbate on April 17 after reportedly experiencing brake failure while positioning for unloading operations, Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) said.
Based on initial reports, the vehicle was preparing to transfer cargo to the vessel M/V Angel Heart, which was scheduled to sail to Lagundi, Ticao Island, when the incident occurred. While maneuvering for unloading, the truck’s brakes allegedly failed, causing it to roll off the pier and plunge into the water.
The driver managed to jump out of the vehicle and survive the incident, although he sustained injuries. He was immediately brought to a nearby hospital for treatment.
As a precautionary measure, an oil spill boom was deployed to contain any possible fuel leakage into the sea.
A crisis committee meeting was also held involving the port authorities, shipping line representatives, and the consignee to coordinate recovery efforts.
The sunken vehicle was later retrieved successfully using a crane operated by NBCDC Construction.
Authorities said an investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances and cause of the incident.
