Sen. JV Ejercito has called on the Philippines to remain firm in defending its sovereignty amid rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea, stressing that his position is pro-Filipino and not anti-China.

In an interview on DZRH’s Damdaming Bayan, Ejercito said he recognizes the longstanding economic and cultural ties between the Philippines and China, noting that he grew up and studied in a Chinese school and maintains friendships with Chinese and Filipino-Chinese people.

“I do not hate the Chinese people. I love my Chinese friends, but I do not like what their government is doing,” Ejercito said.

He clarified that his opposition is directed at what he described as the territorial expansionism of Chinese President Xi Jinping and his government, particularly its actions against Filipino personnel and fishermen in the disputed waters.

Ejercito stressed that the Philippines must stand its ground in protecting its maritime rights while ensuring that its Navy, Coast Guard and fishermen are treated with respect.

“Ayaw natin ng giyera, ang gusto natin ay maiayos ang relasyon na ito pero kailangan natin respetuhin ang ating soberanya, respetuhin ang ating gobyerno, respetuhin nila [China] ang ating Philippine Navy, Philippine Coast Guard at huwag pagkaitan ng hanapbuhay ang ating mga mangingisda,” he said.

On the controversy surrounding the Chinese ambassador's remarks and calls to declare the diplomat persona non grata, Ejercito underscored the importance of diplomacy in addressing tensions between the two countries.

He also rejected the notion that defending Philippine sovereignty means favoring war or siding with the United States, saying his position is rooted in protecting the country's national interests.

Ejercito said the president has likewise been cautious in handling the dispute, favoring diplomatic measures to safeguard the Philippines' sovereignty and interests while seeking to prevent further escalation.
