Filipino Olympian EJ Obiena continued his impressive run this season after winning the Halberstadter Hohenflug pole vault competition in Germany on Saturday (Philippine time).
Obiena secured the gold medal after clearing 5.76 meters on his first attempt, topping a field of 10 competitors in the meet held at Cathedral Square in Halberstadt.
Qatar's Seifeldin Abdelsalam claimed the silver medal after clearing 5.66 meters, while American athlete Cole Walsh settled for bronze with a mark of 5.56 meters.
The Filipino athlete later attempted to clear 5.90 meters but was unsuccessful in all three attempts.
The victory marked Obiena's sixth gold medal of the year and came two weeks after he finished second in the Meeting Madrid in Spain, where he recorded a season-best jump of 5.85 meters.
Obiena opened his campaign this year by winning the International Springer-Meeting Cottbus in Germany and the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tianjin, China. He also topped the ISTAF Indoor Berlin in Germany, the Czesław Cybulski Memorial in Poland, and the Raiffeisen Austrian Open in Austria.
The latest victory also highlighted Obiena's strong return after battling an injury that affected his performance last year.
