President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed Eduardo Oban Jr. as the new National Security Adviser following Eduardo Año’s resignation, according to a Wednesday report.

The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro assured that Oban is well qualified for the job, having a strong background in military operations and national security.

“Secretary Oban is a former chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and a graduate of Philippine Military Academy Class of 1979. He has extensive experience in military operations, defense planning, and national security,” Castro said in a press conference today.

She added that Oban has served as deputy chief of staff for plans, J5, and helmed the Visiting Forces Agreement Commission.

“With his depth of experience, the President is confident that Secretary Oban will provide steady and capable leadership in advancing the country’s national security priorities and ensuring continuity in the government’s efforts to keep the nation safe and secure,” she said.

According to the Palace press officer, Año decided to retire from service after a long career in government and in the military, reported RH 14 Leth Narciso.

On the same day, Año himself announced his retirement, citing health issues requiring his full attention and care.

“Public service has been the defining mission of my life, and it has been my utmost privilege to have served the Filipino people in times of both challenge and opportunity,” he said.

Año’s retirement as National Security Adviser and Director General of the National Security Council (NSC) takes effect on Thursday, April 16.
