The EDSA Magallanes flyover reopened to motorists early Monday, with Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon confirming that repair works were completed ahead of schedule.
Speaking on DZRH’s Dos Por Dos program, Dizon said crews worked around the clock during the Holy Week to finish critical repairs, particularly on joints that had long exposed metal, creating hazards for vehicles, especially motorcycles.
“Mga 4:30 AM, binuksan na po natin. Masaya din po tayo na marami tayong nagawa. Practically po, yung ginadaanan ng mga motorista natin dito sa phase 1 mula Roxas Boulevard ng Orense ng EDSA, tapos na po tayo,” Dizon said.
“Ahead po tayo ng aras 2 buwan,” he added.
Dizon emphasized that the project uses durable materials, similar to those employed on airport runways, with a five-year warranty. He also noted that future works will standardize lane markings and signage according to international standards.
The DPWH official highlighted that drainage improvements are part of the ongoing rehabilitation to prevent recurring pavement damage. He said the full EDSA rehabilitation, initially estimated at P17 billion and set to take 2.5 years, is now projected to cost less than P6 billion with faster completion using new technology and work scheduling.
“This April sisimulan na natin yung mula Orense hanggang Monumento, buong EDSA na by next year. Talagang bagong-bago na at magandang-maganda na. Tuloy-tuloy lang po tayo.”
The reopening comes as Metro Manila continues to see high traffic volumes, and officials hope the completed section will ease congestion along one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares.
