Economist and Professor Emmanuel Leyco urged the government to strengthen economic safeguards, including increasing fuel reserves and reviewing fiscal policies, as Filipinos face mounting financial pressure.

Leyco pointed out the country’s limited preparedness, saying, “Tayo ang reserba natin ay mga hanggang 30 days,” compared to other nations with significantly higher запас capacities.

He stressed the need for stronger government action to build reserves and reduce dependence on private sector storage.

He also raised concerns over the adequacy of current relief measures, noting that transport discounts alone are not enough.

“Napakalaki naman po ang pagtaas ng presyo ng mga pangunahing bilihin… mahihirapan pa rin po ang ating mga mananakay,” he said, highlighting the strain on minimum wage earners.

To address the crisis, Leyco suggested policy shifts such as reviewing fuel taxes and exploring wealth taxation.

“Kung papalitan natin… ng wealth tax… may flexibility pa po tayo sa ating budget,” he said, adding that better spending priorities and targeted subsidies are crucial to help stabilize the economy and protect vulnerable sectors.
