Philippine tennis officials have yet to confirm whether Alex Eala will compete in the WTA 125 Philippine Women's Open in January 2027, but the country's tennis governing body is ready to offer her a wildcard entry if she decides to play.

Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) Secretary General John Rey Tiangco said Eala's participation remains uncertain as the Filipina tennis star focuses on her remaining tournaments this year.

“At this point there is no official confirmation whether Alex Eala will participate in the WTA 125 Philippine Women's Open in January 2027,” Tiangco said in a statement.

“We understand that Alex remains focused on her remaining tournaments this year, and we respect the decisions of Alex and her team regarding her schedule.”

Tiangco added that PHILTA would welcome Eala to the tournament and extend her a wildcard entry, subject to tournament rules and approval, should she choose to compete.

PHILTA said its priority is to support the development of Philippine tennis and provide local players with more opportunities to compete internationally.

Hosting a WTA tournament in Manila marks a significant milestone for Philippine tennis, Tiangco said, as it brings world-class competition closer to Filipino fans and provides local players with valuable international exposure.

“We look forward to a successful tournament next year,” he added.

Eala recently returned to hardcourt action at the Wuhan Open in China but suffered an early exit in the singles competition on Monday.

She lost to Chinese qualifier Shi Han, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the round of 64 at Dongfeng Voyah Center Court.

Eala's doubles campaign with Turkish partner Zeynep Sonmez also ended Tuesday after the pair fell to Ukrainian duo Dayana Yastremska and Anhelina Kalinina, 6-2, 6-3.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Eala's participation, the Philippine Women's Open is expected to provide a major platform for local players to test themselves against international competition when Manila hosts the tournament in January 2027.
