Filipina tennis standout Alex Eala advanced to the semifinals of the Berlin Tennis Open after a commanding 6-3, 6-4 victory over world No. 8 Elina Svitolina on Saturday (PH Time).

Eala delivered a composed and aggressive performance throughout the match, securing her sixth career win against a Top 10 opponent and booking her place in her second career grass-court semifinal.

The 21-year-old Filipina opened the match with confidence, taking an early break to surge to a 3-0 lead in the first set.

Despite a brief response from Svitolina, who closed the gap to 4-3, Eala regained control with steady baseline play and timely shot-making. She fired an ace in the ninth game and converted her set point to seal the opening frame, 6-3.

Svitolina attempted to shift momentum in the second set, battling through a tightly contested opening game that featured multiple deuces.

However, Eala broke early once again and built a 2-0 advantage. The Ukrainian briefly leveled the set at 2-2 after a break to love, but Eala quickly responded with a break of her own to regain the lead.

Maintaining her composure, Eala held serve comfortably, including a love hold for a 4-2 edge, and continued to apply pressure on Svitolina’s service games.

She extended her lead to 5-2 and stood one game away from the match, but Svitolina fought back, recovering a break and narrowing the deficit to 5-4.

Serving for the match, Eala remained steady under pressure, closing out the contest to complete another major upset victory in Berlin.

Eala will face world No. 13 Linda Noskova in the semifinals in a rematch of their previous meeting at the Indian Wells Masters in March, where Noskova won in straight sets.
