Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala continued her impressive run on the WTA Tour after defeating world No. 32 Sorana Cîrstea, 7-5, 6-4, at the WTA1000 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Wednesday to book a spot in the quarterfinals.

Eala displayed poise and maturity beyond her years, edging out Cîrstea in a tightly contested opening set before sealing the straight-sets victory with a composed performance in the second.

The Filipina capitalized on crucial break points and held her nerve in key moments to overcome the experienced Romanian.

With the win, the Philippine tennis star advances to face world No. 4 and third seed Coco Gauff in the next round. The two previously teamed up as doubles partners at the 2025 Italian Open, adding an intriguing layer to their upcoming showdown.

In her short post game interview, Eala expressed confidence heading into the high-stakes matchup.

“I think I’m in a good path. If I continue like this then the next match will be great. I’m looking forward to it,” she said.

She also had high praise for Gauff, acknowledging both her talent and character.

“Coco is such an amazing person and we tend to forget that she’s just a year older than me. But she’s a great role model for so many. So I’m really excited for that match,” Eala added.
