Alexandra “Alex” Eala is making her mark on the WTA Tour, and she did it in style on Friday at the 2026 ASB Classic.

The 20‑year‑old Filipino star defeated Poland’s Magda Linette, 6–3, 6–2, in a commanding quarterfinal performance to secure her spot in the semifinals.

Eala’s journey to this milestone has been a story of persistence and growth. She had faced Linette twice before — losing at the Nottingham Open last year and in the round of 32 at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Open.

But this time, Eala flipped the script. With precise groundstrokes, aggressive returns, and a calm yet determined mindset, she dominated the match from the first serve to the last point.

Eala’s performance captivated fans at the ASB Tennis Centre, showcasing not only her technical skills but also her mental resilience — an essential trait for rising stars on the global stage.

Her consistent baseline play and ability to capitalize on crucial points allowed her to control the pace and rhythm of the match, leaving Linette struggling to find answers.

Looking ahead, Eala will face China’s Wang Xinyu in the semifinals. Wang advanced after Britain’s Francesca Jones retired with a right thigh injury while trailing 6–4, 4–3.

The upcoming clash promises to be a test of nerves and endurance, pitting two young, hungry talents against each other with a spot in the final on the line.
