Filipina tennis star Alex Eala and world No. 30 will open her first Wimbledon campaign as a seeded player against world No. 76 Renata Zarazua in the women’s singles first round on Tuesday, June 30 (Philippine time).
The two previously met at the 2024 Cary Tennis Classic in the United States, where Zarazua rallied to defeat Eala, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.
Eala, seeded No. 29, makes history as the first Filipina to earn a seeding in the Wimbledon Championships, signaling a breakthrough moment in her career on the global stage.
The 21-year-old enters the grass-court Grand Slam following a mixed showing at the Bad Homburg Open.
She advanced to the round of 16 in doubles alongside Serena Williams, before the pair bowed to Alexandra Osborne and Catherine Harrison, 6-3, 6-4.
In singles, Eala suffered an early exit after a round-of-32 loss to world No. 4 Elise Mertens, 6-3, 6-3.
Eala is also set to compete in the Wimbledon women’s doubles event, where she will partner with Nikola Bartunkova. Their first-round match is scheduled for Thursday, July 2 (Philippine time).
With a historic seeding and experience against top-level competition, Eala heads into Wimbledon aiming to make a deep run on one of tennis’ biggest stages.
