Alex Eala overcame a right foot injury and a late fightback from Caty McNally to advance to the Round of 16 of the National Bank Open on Saturday morning, Aug. 8 (Philippine time).

Eala defeated the American, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, in a tightly contested third-round match.

Eala seized control after McNally took an early 3-1 lead in the opening set. The Filipina won five consecutive games to turn the set around and eventually claim it, 6-3.

McNally responded in the second set, but Eala fought back from an early deficit and regained a 3-2 lead.

The match was interrupted when Eala called for a medical timeout after tweaking her ankle. Her right foot was treated before she returned to the court and continued despite the injury.

McNally capitalized on Eala's movement issues and eventually leveled the set at 3-3. Eala later reached match point at 5-4, but McNally held her nerve, forcing another game before taking the set, 7-5, to send the match to a decider.

Eala quickly established a 2-0 lead in the third set and maintained control despite McNally's efforts to fight back.

After McNally cut the deficit to 2-1, Eala won an extended fourth game for a 3-1 advantage. She then held off McNally in another lengthy game to move ahead, 4-3.

Eala eventually built a 5-3 lead and moved to match point advantage, putting herself within reach of victory.

McNally forced another game, but Eala closed out the deciding set to secure her place in the Round of 16.

Eala will next face Switzerland's Belinda Bencic in the fourth round of the tournament.

The victory keeps Eala's campaign alive in Toronto as she continues her run at the National Bank Open.
