Alexandra “Alex” Eala continued her impressive run in China, barging into the semifinals of the Jingshan Tennis Open following a 6-4, 6-1 victory over home bet Jia-Jing Lu on Friday.
The Filipina rising star, seeded world No. 58, overcame early struggles in the opening frame as she trailed 2-4. Eala, however, flipped the momentum with a blistering stretch of four straight games to pocket the first set.
Lu, 35, briefly raised hopes of a comeback after snatching the first game of the second set, but the 20-year-old Eala was relentless from there, stringing together six unanswered games to wrap up the match in just over an hour.
The victory came on the heels of her earlier wins over Belarus’ Aliona Falei in the Round of 32 and Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi in the Round of 16.
Standing in the way of a finals appearance is New Zealand’s Lulu Sun, a familiar rival whom Eala faced in last year’s Wimbledon qualifiers.
Sun, currently ranked around No. 146, was once ranked as high as No. 39 in September 2024. She is having a strong run in Jingshan as well, entering the semifinals without dropping a set in her matches to date.
