Alexandra Eala will compete only in singles at the upcoming WTA 500 event in Washington after withdrawing from the doubles draw, tournament organizers confirmed.

No reason was given for the decision by the 21-year-old Filipina, who is currently ranked world No. 29 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

Eala had been slated to partner with Venus Williams, but the former world No. 1 will now team up with Diana Shnaider instead. The new pairing is set to face Ulrikke Eikeri and Quinn Gleason in the round of 16.

The two previously teamed up at the Bad Homburg Open in Germany in June, where they reached the quarterfinals. Their tandem had received a wildcard entry into the Washington tournament and had already trained together last week.

Despite the doubles withdrawal, Eala remains in the singles draw and will open her campaign against Qinwen Zheng in the round of 32.

The Washington event, which runs from July 27 to Aug. 2, is part of Eala’s buildup to the US Open in New York, the final Grand Slam tournament of the year.
