Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala delivered a gritty comeback victory over Germany’s Laura Siegemund in the Round of 64 of the Miami Open, booking her place in the third round early Friday (Philippine time).
Eala recovered from a tight opening-set loss to prevail, 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-3, in a grueling three-hour and 20-minute match that showcased her composure and resilience on hard court.
The 20-year-old Pinay netter regrouped after a narrow tiebreak defeat in the first set, then dictated play in the next two frames to seal the win.
With the victory, the No. 31 seed advances to the Round of 32, where she is set for a marquee showdown against either world No. 3 Iga Świątek or fellow Pole Magda Linette.
Eala is slated to return to action on Saturday (PH time), continuing her impressive run in a tournament that has become a significant stage in her young career.
The Filipina standout’s latest triumph adds to her growing confidence in Miami, where she previously turned heads in 2025. Then ranked No. 140 and competing as a wild card, Eala stunned the tennis world with a semifinal run that included victories over top names such as Świątek, Madison Keys, and Jelena Ostapenko.
After the match, Eala reflected on her return to the tournament with a sense of pride and gratitude.
“It means the world to me,” she said. “It says a lot about my progress and how I’ve developed as a player and as a person. I came into Miami last year as a wild card. Now I’m in the third round again, so I’m really, really happy.”
She also credited her opponent’s toughness, adding that competing at such a high level continues to motivate her growth on tour.
With momentum on her side and bigger challenges ahead, Eala once again finds herself in familiar territory in Miami—poised to take on the world’s best and prove she belongs among them.
