Alex Eala opened her 2026 Single’s campaign with a performance that blended resilience, belief, and quiet fearlessness, turning back Croatian Olympian Donna Vekic in a stirring three-set victory at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand.

After dropping the opening set, 4-6, the 20-year-old Filipina regrouped and steadily wrestled control of the match, outlasting the experienced Vekic, 6-4, 6-4, in the Round of 32 on Tuesday.

The win marked one of Eala’s most significant triumphs on the WTA Tour, coming against a seasoned opponent known for her power and composure on hard courts.

Eala’s ability to absorb pressure and reset after the first set proved decisive. She tightened her service games, extended rallies, and forced Vekic into longer exchanges as the match wore on.

In the final two sets, Eala capitalized on key break-point opportunities, showing poise well beyond her years while closing out the contest with confidence.

The victory also carried emotional weight for Eala, who has spent much of her young career far from home, competing across continents. Addressing the crowd after the match, she reflected on the journey that brought her to Auckland.

“It's so special and if there's one thing I've learned in 2025, it's that home is a people and not a place so thank you, everyone. Maraming salamat,” Eala said.

Her words resonated with Filipino fans watching from afar, many of whom have followed her rise from a junior Grand Slam champion to a regular presence on the professional circuit.

The win over Vekic signals continued progress as Eala builds momentum early in the season, testing herself against higher-ranked and more established opponents.

Eala paired with American Tennis player Iva Jovic previously matched against veterans Venus Williams and Donna Vekic, 7-6 (7), 6-1, on Monday, victoriously moving forward to the Round 16 of the women’s doubles tournament.
