Alex Eala advanced to the Round of 32 of the Italian Open after defeating Wang Xinyu, 6-4, 6-3, on Friday (Philippine time), marking a breakthrough win in the WTA 1000 tournament.

Eala delivered a composed performance from the baseline, capitalizing on key service breaks to secure the straight-sets victory and even their head-to-head record at 1-1.

The win served as redemption for the 20-year-old Filipina, who previously fell to Wang in a grueling three-set semifinal at the ASB Classic in Auckland in January.

That loss denied Eala a second WTA finals appearance, following her runner-up finish at the Eastbourne Open in 2025.

Against Wang this time, Eala showed improved consistency and shot selection, closing out both sets without allowing the match to extend.

With the victory, Eala moves on to face a major test in the next round against world No. 2 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan.
