Filipina tennis standout Alex Eala saw her impressive campaign at the 2026 Dubai Tennis Championships come to an end after a 6-0, 6-2 quarterfinal loss to World No. 4 Coco Gauff on Dubai’s Centre Court on Thursday night, February 19.

Ranked No. 47 in the world, Eala struggled to find her rhythm early as Gauff dominated the opening set in just 23 minutes. The two-time Grand Slam champion maintained control throughout the match, closing out the contest in a little over an hour to secure a semifinal berth.

Eala showed signs of life late in the second set with a brief fightback, but fatigue appeared to take its toll on the 20-year-old, who had been enjoying one of her strongest tournament runs on the WTA Tour.

Fans in attendance were unable to witness the high-energy performance the young Filipina has become known for, as she looked a step behind against her top-seeded opponent.

However, the support of the Filipinos remained unwavering, with cheers for Eala echoing throughout Centre Court despite the lopsided scoreline, underscoring the growing presence and pride of her countrymen on the global tennis stage as she battled world No. 4 Coco Gauff.

Despite committing eight double faults compared to Eala’s lone error, Gauff’s consistency from the baseline proved too much for the rising Filipina star.

After the match, Gauff acknowledged the crowd support for Eala and the impact of her presence on the global tennis scene.

“I know you're mostly supporting Alex, but I have to say, it is great to be on a crowded court. I've played this tournament for many years and to see the stadium full, it means a lot,” Gauff said.

“And also, I'd like to thank Alex for bringing a new demographic to the sport. I really appreciate it. I think it's great. I know sometimes it's tough when you're playing against a home crowd. But I think that it's great for the sport, so keep being enthusiastic and keep rooting for your player.”

In a show of sportsmanship, Eala later took to social media to commend her opponent, saying, “Love sharing the court with you, always learn a lot.”
