Alex Eala suffered an early exit at the Wuhan Open on Monday, losing to Chinese qualifier Shi Han, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the round of 64 at Dongfeng Voyah Center Court.

The 21-year-old Eala, seeded 13th and ranked world No. 19, fell to the world No. 217 Shi in her return to hardcourt competition following the 2026 Asian Games, where she won a bronze medal.

The Wuhan Open is a WTA 1000 tournament, one of the premier events on the women’s professional tennis calendar outside the Grand Slams.

Eala started strongly, rallying from 0-40 down in the 10th game to break Shi and take the first set, 6-4. She committed 17 unforced errors against just six winners in the set but capitalized on crucial points.

The Filipina carried her momentum into the second set, winning nine consecutive points and taking an early lead. Shi, however, recovered to break Eala at 3-3 before claiming the next two games to win the set, 6-3.

Shi maintained her surge in the decider, breaking Eala early and extending her run to seven consecutive games to build a 3-0 lead. Eala struggled with double faults and inconsistent returns as the Chinese qualifier took control.

Although Eala halted the slide with a service hold, Shi continued to dictate play and moved within a game of victory at 5-2. Eala held serve to make it 5-3, but Shi closed out the match on her serve, converting her second match point after Eala sent a short return.

Despite her singles exit, Eala will return to the court Tuesday for a round-of-32 doubles match with Turkish partner and close friend Zeynep Sonmez. The pair will face Ukrainians Dayana Yastremska and Anhelina Kalinina.

Shi advances to the second round after knocking out the tournament’s 13th seed.
