Filipina tennis standout Alex Eala saw her campaign in the 2026 WTA Linz Open come to a close after a hard-fought 4-6, 5-7 loss to fourth-seeded Latvian Jelena Ostapenko in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.

Eala, who entered the tournament unseeded, showed resilience against the former Grand Slam champion but ultimately fell short in straight sets.
Ostapenko’s power and experience proved decisive in key moments, allowing her to advance to the quarterfinals where she will face Romania’s Elena Ruse.
Despite the defeat, the 20-year-old Eala’s stint in Linz marked another milestone in her steady rise on the professional tour. Currently ranked World No. 46, she earned a spot in the main draw following the withdrawal of China’s Qinwen Zheng due to injury.
As the top-ranked player on the alternate list, Eala was elevated into the main draw, maximizing the opportunity with a competitive showing against one of the tournament’s top seeds.
Eala now shifts her focus to the clay-court of the season, where she hopes to bounce back in the Stuttgart Open scheduled from April 13 to 19 in Germany. The rising Filipina star is expected to return to training and fine-tune her game as she seeks a stronger run on her preferred surface.
