Alex Eala has made history as the first Filipina player to be seeded at Wimbledon, earning the No. 29 spot in the Ladies’ Singles draw for this year’s Grand Slam in London.
The seeding marks a milestone for Philippine tennis, with Eala becoming the first Filipino to receive a seed at a Grand Slam event since Treat Huey, who was seeded in men’s doubles in 2016.
Eala’s inclusion in the Wimbledon seedings reflects her steady rise on the professional circuit, highlighted by strong performances in recent tournaments leading up to the grass-court major.
A duo in sync at Bad Homburg
Meanwhile, Eala continued her momentum in doubles competition, teaming up with Venus Williams to reach the quarterfinals of the Bad Homburg Open in Germany.
The Filipino-American tandem defeated Catherine Harrison and Alexandra Osborne in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, in a composed outing on Wednesday (Philippine time).
Eala and Williams controlled key stretches of both sets, showcasing effective coordination and consistency to secure the victory.
They are set to face the second-seeded pair of Tereza Mihalikova and Olivia Nicholls in the next round as they aim for a semifinal berth.
