

Alex Eala advanced to the women’s singles semifinals of the 2026 Asian Games after beating Chinese Taipei’s Joanna Garland, 7-5, 6-0, in the quarterfinals Wednesday, September 30.
The top-seeded Eala, ranked No. 18 in the world, secured at least a bronze medal with the victory over the world No. 143 Garland.
Eala had to grind through a tight opening set before pulling away in the second.
Garland took an early 1-0 lead after breaking Eala’s serve, but the Filipino quickly answered by breaking back. The two players traded breaks again as the set remained closely contested at 3-3.
Eala then regained the lead at 4-3, but Garland held serve to level the set again at 4-4.
The Filipina regained momentum late in the set, breaking Garland to move ahead 6-5 before serving for the set. Eala then produced several strong points, including a forehand winner, to close out the opening frame, 7-5.
Eala carried the momentum into the second set, winning the first four games and building a 4-0 advantage.
She continued to dictate play with her forehand and aggressive returns, breaking Garland again to move within a game of the semifinals.
Serving for the match at 5-0, Eala faced resistance from Garland, who earned a break-point opportunity. Eala saved the chance and eventually reached match point with a service winner.
After Garland sent a return wide, Eala completed the straight-set victory, 7-5, 6-0.
The win assured Eala of at least a bronze medal in the women’s singles event.
Eala entered the Asian Games as the top seed and the highest-ranked player in the women’s singles draw.
