Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala has secured a spot in the fourth round of the Indian Wells Open following the retirement of World No. 4 Coco Gauff due to a forearm injury.

The match, which saw Eala and Gauff battling on Stadium One, took a dramatic turn in the first set when Gauff complained of a tingling nerve sensation in her arm.

Medical staff attended to the 21-year-old American during a three-minute timeout. Gauff, who has only retired once in her career back in 2022, ultimately could not continue, giving Eala the victory.

After the match, an emotional Eala expressed her gratitude and respect for her opponent:

“I wanna say thank you to all the incredible women who have paved the way and who have advocated for themselves and for other women. Among them is Coco. So thank you, Coco, for being an amazing competitor and amazing role model, and I really hope that everything is well and you will recover soon.”

Eala also took a moment to thank her mother for her unwavering support throughout the tournament.

The 20-year-old Pinay netter will be tested next by World No. 14 Linda Noskova in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, March 11 (PH Time).
