Before podcasts, live streams, and trending hashtags took over social media, there was already a familiar voice that filled Filipino homes, heard from busy sari-sari stores, tricycle terminals, and communities all across the country.
That voice belongs to DZRH, the country’s first existing radio station which now marks its 86th year of public service.
Founded on July 15, 1939, the station originally known as KZRH under the Heacock Company, featured Hal Bowie as the first voice to ever go on-air, marking the beginning of what would become DZRH.
From ‘soap operas’ to ‘breaking news’
In the 1950s and '60s, DZRH captured hearts and entertained millions with classic radio dramas like the first radio drama entitled Gulong ng palad and the well-known Gabi ng Lagim. As times changed, DZRH adapted, evolving into a full-fledged news and public affairs station, known for real-time news, disaster response, and in-depth public service.
But as the landscape shifted, DZRH continued evolving into a 24-hour news and public affairs powerhouse, while retaining its capacity for storytelling and cultural relevance.
Its legacy includes programs that became household names like Damdaming Bayan, DZRH Breaktime, and Balansyado continue to define radio journalism standards, often simulcast across DZRH News Television and online platforms, proving that an old voice can still thrive in the digital age.
Beyond its well-known programs, DZRH is also highly regarded for its commitment to public service. Through regional expansion, nationwide simultaneous broadcasts events, and community-based programs like Operation Tulong, the station continues to strengthen its presence on the ground.
The power of compassion, connection, and credible news remains at the heart of its mission.
WALUMPU’T ANIM GALING!
Staying relevant in the digital age, DZRH has evolved from a purely radio platform into a completely developed multimedia organization. The station now broadcasts on television, social media, and livestreams, allowing a wider and more diverse audience to access content across all digital landscapes.
Aside from its flagship station DZRH 666 kHz, the organization has expanded its reach through various platforms—DZRH News Television, and DZRH online. All of which showcase its commitment to innovation and adaptability in the ever-evolving media landscape.
Over the years, DZRH has received numerous awards for excellence in news, entertainment, and public service. From KBP Golden Dove Awards to Gawad Tanglaw, affirming its consistent commitment to ethical journalism and broadcasting excellence.
In 2009, during the 7th Gawad Tanglaw, DZRH was named Radio Station of the Year, and its program Radyo Balintataw was recognized as Best Radio Program.
Up until now, DZRH still remained the Best AM Radio Station in Metro Manila at the 28th KBP Golden Dove Awards on June 26, 2025.
Also recognized for standout programs: Radyo Henyo (Best Science & Tech), Damdaming Bayan (Public Affairs), Love You ‘Nak (Radio PSA: El Niño Series), Juan Tamban (Drama), and Tula at Awit para kay Dr. Rizal (Culture & Arts). Journalists Jecelle Ricafort, Angelo Palmones, Milky Rigonan, and Mae Binauhan also won in their respective categories.
These recognitions are not just trophies, but symbols of trust from its listeners and peers in the industry.
86 years and still moving forward
As it turns 86 this 2025, DZRH continues to blend tradition with innovation. The station was anchored by a new generation of broadcasters and digital content creators; it remains committed to the mission set eight decades ago: "Una sa Pilipino, Una sa Pilipinas."
In the digital age, DZRH didn’t fade — it expanded.
Now streaming live on social media, YouTube, and cable, DZRH reaches audiences across generations. Its loyal following includes both rural communities relying on transistor radios and younger viewers tuning in on smartphones.
As DZRH celebrates this historic anniversary, it looks back with pride and forward with purpose, moving ahead in all waves of media, yet firmly rooted in the excellence that has shaped its legacy.
