

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is strengthening its assistance to students, teachers, staff, and other individuals affected by the shooting incident at Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) on Tuesday, August 18.
DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian met with ADZU officials on Wednesday, August 19, to assess the current situation and identify additional interventions needed following the incident.
The department said Gatchalian emphasized the DSWD’s readiness to work closely with the university administration and other partner agencies to provide appropriate support to those affected.
Among the interventions being considered are psychosocial support, psychological first aid, and other social welfare services for students, faculty members, school personnel, and other individuals affected by the shooting.
The DSWD said the response forms part of the government’s continuing efforts to address the welfare and protection of children and victims of violence.
The meeting was attended by former Congressman Celso Lobregat, Zamboanga Vice Mayor Beng Climaco, ADZU President Fr. Ernald Andal, SJ, Board Chairman Pocholo Soliven, Vice President for Higher Education Fr. Rene Tacastacas, SJ, Vice President for Basic Education Jeffrey Jalani, Vice President for Administration Fr. Richard Ella, SJ, psychotherapist Joel Liwanag, SJ, and PFA Point Person Chaldeanne Wee.
The government, under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., continues to coordinate with concerned institutions and agencies in providing assistance and ensuring the welfare of those affected by the incident.
