The truck driver involved in the Batasan-San Mateo road crash in Quezon City in May tested positive for illegal drugs, the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said.

On Wednesday, June 4, RH 5 Val Gonzales reported the truck driver had undergone an alcohol and breath analyzer (ABA) and other drug tests, under the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013. Results from the QCPD Forensic Unit found the latter had tested positive for methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu.

As a result, multiple charges were filed against the driver, who is identified as alias “Eruel.” He is facing complaints for reckless imprudence resulting in: multiple homicides, multiple physical injuries, and multiple damage to property.

The QCPD’s District Director, PCol. Randy Glenn Silvio emphasized that the case serves as a warning to individuals who drive under the influence of illegal drugs. Those caught by authorities engaging in such would be held fully accountable under the law.

Silvio reminded them of the severe punishment they would face, emphasizing that it can result in reclusion temporal, or over 12 years to 20 years maximum imprisonment. Moreover, violators would be fined PHP 300,000 to PHP 500,000 if the victim dies.

The QCPD reported that the truck was driving to Marikina City carrying construction material when the fatal accident occurred.

Based on their investigation, three people were killed, while seven sustained injuries.
