Filipina drag artist Misua, who was set to appear in the upcoming fourth season of the reality competition show Drag Race Philippines, has died at the age of 27.
The show’s production company, World of Wonder, confirmed the news on Wednesday, April 2, through a joint statement with Drag Race Philippines.
According to the announcement, Misua passed away in her sleep on the morning of April 2.
“We are heartbroken to share that Misua, a talented queen set to appear on Season 4 of Drag Race Philippines, passed away in her sleep on the morning of April 2,” the statement read.
“She brought light, artistry, and joy to those around her, and she will be deeply missed,” it continued.
The production team also announced that filming for the show has been temporarily halted to allow cast and crew members time to grieve.
“We have paused production to care for and support our cast and crew during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and all who loved her,” the statement added.
Misua, whose real name was Jason Elvie Ty, hailed from Cagayan de Oro. She was known in the local drag scene for her vibrant, camp-inspired performances and a distinctive do-it-yourself approach to her craft, creating her own costumes and visual concepts.
Tributes from the drag community quickly poured in on social media following news of her death, including Drag Fans Philippines and Drag Scene PH.
Fellow performers and fan groups expressed their grief and honored her contributions to the local drag scene. Among those who paid tribute was fellow drag artist and sister Hana Beshie, who shared an emotional message remembering their shared dreams and promising to continue Misua’s legacy.
“Nangarap tayo ng sabay sis,” she said in a social media post.
“PROMISE KO SAYO TUTUPARIN KO LAHAT NG MGA GUSTO MONG GAWIN! Your stay in this world may fall short but I will make sure that your name and your artistry will live on!" she continued.
The production team said they are in close contact with Misua’s family as the community continues to mourn the loss of one of its rising stars.
