The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has committed to construct a covered walkway connecting SM North EDSA and Trinoma in Quezon City to improve pedestrian safety and convenience.
DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the project was ordered by the President, citing persistent flooding and unsafe conditions along the existing passageway, especially during heavy rains.
“Nakita natin ‘yung sitwasyon sa walkway between the two malls, at grabe talaga ‘yung dinadaanan ng mga pasahero doon. Kapag umuulan, bumabaha pa sa daanan kaya grabeng pasakit talaga sa mga dumadaan, kaya palalagyan natin ng bubong ‘yang walkway,” Secretary Lopez said.
Lopez added that the walkway is planned to be linked to the Common Station, providing seamless access to MRT-3, LRT-1, and the upcoming MRT-7, which are all targeted to be operational by 2027.
In the interim, MRT-3 has inspected the area and installed temporary cement slabs in flood-prone sections to ensure safer passage for commuters.
