The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Friday instructed the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA)—in collaboration with the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) private operator, the New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC)—to promptly probe the collapse of a partial ceiling at the arrival extension area of Terminal 1 on the same day.

“The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has directed the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) to closely coordinate with the private operator of NAIA, New NAIA Infra Corp (NNIC), to immediately investigate the incident involving the collapse of a partial ceiling at the arrival extension area of Terminal 1 today, April 3,” it said in a statement.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni “Banoy” Lopez ordered both to ensure that all passengers and airport personnel are safe and secure, and to submit a detailed report explaining the cause of the incident.

According to an initial report by the NNIC, seven individuals were injured in the incident and have received medical treatment.

The transportation agency vowed to closely monitor the situation, produce an exhaustive evaluation of the incident, and implement measures necessary to ensure that similar incidents do not recur.

As of the release of the DOTr’s statement on the matter, the NAIA Terminal 1 continues to operate as usual.

The NNIC confirmed that the ceiling panel collapsed at around 10:43 a.m. on Friday in the West Arrival Curb C area outside the passenger terminal building, close to a food concession outlet. It also corroborated the report that seven individuals sustained injuries but were immediately attended to.

“NNIC’s medical team, airport security personnel, and the PNP Aviation Security Group responded at once, secured the area, and assisted those affected,” the NNIC said in a separate statement.
