Vanessa Blanca, a former member of the singing group Sugarpop and one of the voices behind the popular hip-hop song “DOTA O Ako,” died Wednesday, Aug. 19, following an accident at the condominium where she was staying in Manila. She was 30.

A relative of Blanca announced her death on social media, asking friends, fans and the public to give the singer’s immediate family privacy as they mourned.

In a post, Blanca’s first cousin, Ivy Ann Salaum Jubelag, described the singer as both a beloved cousin and a younger sister to her.

“Vanessa was the only daughter (única hija) of my aunt, Anabella Quillo-Kalinski,” Jubelag wrote, adding that the loss was especially painful for the family.

Jubelag did not provide further details about the accident. She said the family would announce details regarding Blanca’s wake and funeral arrangements at a later time, once the necessary preparations had been made.

“Rest peacefully, my dear Wani,” Jubelag wrote. “You were deeply loved, and you will forever be remembered and missed.”

Blanca’s death also drew condolences from her former Sugarpop colleagues, who remembered her as part of the group’s musical journey.

Singer-actress Julie Anne San Jose expressed disbelief over Blanca’s death and recalled plans for a Sugarpop reunion.

“Wani Still can't believe it... Plano pa naman natin mag reunion. Sugarpop will never be the same without you,” San Jose said in a tribute shared on social media.

Blanca was known to fans for her work with Sugarpop and for her association with “DOTA O Ako,” a song that became popular among Filipino listeners.

Her death came as a shock to friends, former colleagues and fans, who paid tribute to the singer online.

Wake and funeral arrangements will be announced by the family at a later time.
