The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has ordered Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball head coach Tab Baldwin to appear before the agency on Monday to present his valid Alien Employment Permit (AEP), following concerns raised after the deaths of two Blue Eagles players during a team-building activity.
DOLE Secretary Francis Tolentino said Baldwin is required to personally appear at 10 a.m. on Monday to submit documentation proving his legal authorization to work in the country.
“Kailangan pumunta po sa harap ko si Coach Baldwin sa Lunes at alas-10 ng umaga personally to show his valid and current alien employment permit (AEP) issued by this department authorizing him to serve as head coach of the Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball team,” Tolentino said.
He added that Baldwin must also demonstrate that his permit covers the full scope of his duties, including supervision of off-campus activities such as team-building exercises.
“Number two, prove that the AEP covers the full scope of his coaching and supervision campus training activities such as the team building exercise in Aurora,” he said.
The directive comes in the aftermath of the tragic incident on June 8, when Ateneo Blue Eagles players Rene Clert Baterbonia (19) and Divine Adili (21) reportedly drowned during a team building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.
DOLE has not yet issued further findings regarding the circumstances of the incident but emphasized that compliance with labor and immigration requirements remains under review.
