The Department of Justice (DOJ) has firmly denied circulating claims that former Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Zaldy Co has not been arrested, confirming that he is currently under the custody of authorities in the Czech Republic.
In a press briefing, Justice Secretary Frederick A. Vida clarified that reports questioning Co’s arrest are unfounded.
“Unang-una, nais kong pabulaanan yung mga ibang nagsasabi na wala sa kustodiya ng Czech Republic si accused na si former congressman Zaldy Co. With this press briefing, I do confirm that it’s not a myth—it’s factual... Nandoon siya sa kustodiya ng Czech authorities,” Vida said.
The DOJ chief added that the Philippine government has already initiated the process to bring Co back to the country, noting that efforts date back to last year following the issuance of arrest warrants by the Sandiganbayan over multiple cases filed against him.
According to Vida, the Philippine Center on Transnational Crime (PCTC) began coordinating international procedures as early as November 24 to facilitate the return of the fugitive former lawmaker.
When asked whether Philippine authorities or embassy officials have already established direct communication with Co, Vida said there is no confirmed information on such contact. However, he acknowledged logistical challenges in the process, particularly the distance between the Philippines and the Czech Republic.
“Syempre, yung distance is a challenge. But that’s why I’m flying to the Czech Republic very soon—within a week. Arrangements are already being made for a meeting with the relevant Czech authorities,” he added.
Co has been in hiding since 2025 amid allegations linked to anomalous flood control projects. His arrest and possible extradition mark a significant development in the government’s efforts to hold officials accountable for corruption charges abroad.
