The Department of Health (DOH) has warned residents about the health dangers posed by ash fall following a moderately explosive eruption of Mount Kanlaon.

A two-minute "moderate" eruption occurred on Thursday night over Kanlaon, the Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. It added that the eruption produced an ash plume that continues to affect surrounding communities as of the latest update.

In a report by RH Boy Gonzales, according to the DOH, volcanic ash is hazardous to health and the public must take extra precautions, especially in areas affected by falling ash.

Authorities strongly advise residents to wear face masks when going outdoors, with N95 masks recommended for better protection. In the absence of medical-grade masks, a damp cloth may be used to help filter fine ash particles that can irritate the nose, throat, and lungs.

Health officials also emphasized the importance of avoiding the volcano’s Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), where concentrations of toxic gases and ash are significantly higher. Prolonged exposure in these areas may pose serious respiratory risks.

Residents are urged to close all doors and windows and seal gaps with wet cloths or towels to prevent ash from entering their homes. Keeping indoor spaces clean and minimizing dust accumulation are also advised to reduce exposure.

The DOH further reminded the public to stay well-hydrated to help ease irritation of the throat, mouth, and lungs caused by ash inhalation.

The residents near the area is encouraged to remain alert and monitor official announcements from Phivolcs and local government units for updates and additional safety measures.
