The Department of Energy (DOE) sought to reassure the public despite another increase in fuel prices this week.
In an interview with DZRH News, Asst. Director Rodela Romero of the DOE–Oil Industry Management Bureau said she does not see oil price hikes continuing in the coming weeks.
Romero explained that although colder weather in other countries usually increases fuel demand for heating, this does not significantly affect the Philippines. She noted that 60 to 70 percent of petroleum consumption in the country comes from the transportation sector, not from heating use.
Tuesday marked the third consecutive week of fuel price increases. Gasoline went up by ₱0.40 per liter, kerosene by ₱0.80 per liter, and diesel by ₱1.40 per liter.
According to Romero, the recent price hikes were driven by trade tensions between the United States and the European Union, as well as increased demand from China, which affected global oil prices.
Despite this, the DOE said it will continue to monitor the situation to ensure fair and reasonable fuel pricing for consumers.
